No sit / No lie is a participatory theatre project that aims to spark a community conversation around the background, impact and alternatives for the No sit / No lie city ordinance, in Austin TX. The ordinance makes it illegal to sit or lay down in downtown Austin, and is believed by its opponents to criminalize and discriminate against those who is experiencing homelessness.
Gathering Ground Theatre is excited to be awarded with the Community Initiative funding support of the Cultural Arts Division of the city of Austin. The funding, together with the the generous support of the First Baptist Church of Austin, allows us to bring the important topic we are dealing with to broader audiences, to enhance our reach out work, and to get the attention of more policy makers, as well as the general public. It is also encouraging to see that the City of Austin supports an open discussion around criminalization of homelessness, and possible modifications to the local legislation that creates it.
